Instructions to the duty engineer during machinery operation

The Chief Engineer should deploy personnel for machinery operation in port and at sea, preparing for an emergency. If the vessel is at anchor, the Chief Engineer shall ensure a watch order similar to that at sea as required. The Engineer of the watch shall make checks following a ship specific checklist before commencing the operation of machinery, thereby seeing that the machinery is in a condition that may permit such operation. He shall affix his signature on the checklist. On commencing the machinery operation, the watch's Engineer should switch the indicator lamp from 'Manned / attend ' to 'Unmanned / Unattended' and enter the time of such commencement in the Engine Logbook.

He shall contact the Officer of the watch to check that overall buzzers and lamps of the bridge control console of the main engine are in-normal, that the indicator lamp to show the person on duty is 'no,' and that the control position of the main engine is on the bridge. He shall conduct lamp and buzzer tests of the extended (remote) alarm system at necessary places where he will visit during such periods, such as private cabins, official rooms, and passageways.

The Duty Engineer shall observe the following items during machinery operation:
  1. He shall be within the audible range of alarms while on duty.
  2. When the alarm is actuated, he shall directly go to the engine control room to acknowledge the alarm and take appropriate measures.
  3. If necessary, he shall report to the Chief Engineer after that and receive instructions regarding measures to cope with such an accident.
  4. If necessary, He shall inform the Officer of the watch of the situation.
The operation shall only be interrupted by the Chief Engineer, in such case, the Duty Engineer shall notify the Officer of the watch to request him to switch over the indicator lamp to 'Manned' and enter such change shall be noted in the Logbook.

The Engine Rating shall, under the command of the Engineer of the watch, be engaged mainly in the following operations.
  1. Checking of temperatures and pressures at specified locations of the machinery.
  2. Surveillance of the machinery.
  3. Inspection rounds throughout the machinery spaces, shaft tunnel & steering room, reefer rooms, etc.
  4. Oiling, greasing of the machinery.
  5. Measurement of tank levels in the machinery spaces.
  6. Transfer of bilge to holding tanks from the machinery spaces and shaft tunnel.
  7. Housekeeping of the machinery spaces.
  8. Other operations as instructed by duty engineer.

Instructions to Engine Rating on watch or ordered to be on duty

The Engine Rating of the watch shall observe the following items during his watch.
  1. He shall not absent himself from the engine room without the permission of the Engineer of the watch.
  2. He shall pay attention to the operational condition of the main engine and auxiliary engines, and the bilge of the engine room & shaft tunnel, and report to the Duty Engineer immediately when he has found abnormal conditions.
